Eric was putting the finishing touches on lunch when he heard the doorbell ring. His shaggy sheepdog, Max, started barking excitedly. It was something that Alana had said to him in the hospital when he had fallen off the dock... and she saved him.
You're all alone?
He had always been used to being alone, but after she pointed that out to him... it stuck to him. A few days later, Ron had gone to the animal shelter and David Noland had helped him adopt Max, a rescued dog who had been found wandering around Storybrooke, ownerless. Alone.
And now the dog went everywhere with him. Max was becoming a bit of a mascot at the station. Alana even liked him.
Why was he thinking about Alana? He had moved on... even if she wouldn't. Well... there was nothing to even move on FROM... nothing ever started.
Eric sighed. "It's okay Max... calm down, boy..." He opened the door. Ariel was there. She was... stunning. All of the mermaid princesses were. He was about to greet her, but Max jumped up on her. "MAX, NO...bad dog..." He kneeled down, grasping the dog by the collar, patting his side. "Sorry about that. He's... excitable..." Eric smiled up at her.

Ariel smiled, "Oh, don't worry, he is so cute." Ariel remembered the when she got here the first time she was greeted by a dog. She bent down and said hello to Max laughing when he licked her.
"Hello Eric, its nice to see you again." Ariel said now standing up because she greeted the dog before him.

"It's nice to see you too, Ariel." He realized he was smiling too much. He cleared his throat and gestured into his home. "Please come on in. Welcome to my humble abode." He closed the door behind her. "Lunch is almost ready." He flashed a smile before leading her out towards the large kitchen. "I hope you're hungry. On today's menu is pepper-honey cedar plank salmon, a family recipe."
He chuckled, until a thought occurred to him. He glanced at Ariel, worried. "Oh... oh gosh, I feel like an ass... do mermaids even EAT fish? Or is that some kind of cannibalism... oh geez." He quickly pulled out lettuce and other things out from his fridge. "I can make us salads if you want... I make a mean wardorf..."

Ariel smiled at him, "Actually, we do eat fish so don't worry." He was so nice and caring it was something she wasn't used to. Well Jefferson was...but she wasn't going there right now.
"Wow, your quite the cook aren't you? I'm impressed the only thing I can seem to manage is warming up soup." Ariel told him wondering if she should explain that she wasn't cursed like her sisters. She would wait and tell him later.

Eric was relieved. He smiled at her soup comment, knowing there was probably an amusing story behind that little confession. So she couldn't cook.
Neither could Alana... she always brought in microwavable food to work-
STOP THINKING ABOUT ALANA.
"Well... when you live alone, you gotta learn to fend for yourself... I just wanted to get better at it instead of eating Hungry Mans all my life..." He got a laugh at that. She had a nice laugh. At least that was one CLEAR difference between Ariel and... her sister. "I'm really glad you came, Ariel." He said, sincerely, as he took a wine bottle and popped the cork. He muffled the noise and caught it in his hand... he had opened enough bottles in his life, being at the scene of most parties in the small town.
"I know it must have been weird... asking for your number the way I did... but I just find you, really your whole FAMILY, fascinating. And you have a killer voice..." He poured white wine for the two of them in little flute glasses. "So I wanted to get to know you more. Get into the inner psyche of a mermaid princess." He grinned, boyish dimple appearing.

Ariel smiled, "Well I am glad you did its not often I get asked out by someone as nice as you. Thank you, I have been singing since, I was little all my sisters do. I have to confess I wasn't actually here with them. So it feels like a don't know them anymore." Ariel accepted the wine he poured she took a sip it was sweet.
"Of course you can ask me anything about being a mermaid. Its not something people usually ask me about." Ariel told him he was really cute when he smiled.

Eric took their two plates over to the glass table near the kitchen area; Ariel followed behind with the wine glasses. A floor to ceiling window overlooked some of the town and the bay. The water actually looked blue today, instead of it's usual gray. Matching Ariel's eyes.
"So... this ocean Kingdom, Atlantica?... it was ruled by your father, King Triton, right?" He asked. "Guy kinda ruled with an iron fist, huh? Doesn't think much of humans?"

Ariel smiled she enjoyed the view of the ocean his place had.
"Oh, yes Atlantica our father really did hate humans. Humans killed our mother well actually pirates did. He never trusted humans of any kind of after that. I haven't seen him here yet, I left home and I don't think he has forgiven me for that." Ariel admitted.
She took a bite of the fish. "Wow, Eric this is great."

Pirates had KILLED her parents. He sat back against his chair. No wonder... all the disdain. And then Ariel running OFF with one... it must have put a lot of tension on the family. And Alana....
He was doing it again.
He focused back in on the woman before him, sensing the sadness in her voice as she recalled this information. Maybe dwelling on the past wasn't the best idea. At least not on her past.
"Thanks." He smiled, finally taking a bite off of his own plate. "Well, I'm an open book... though being a poor coastal prince isn't nearly as interesting as having a father that commands OCEANS." He laughed, hoping to defuse the slightly graying environment.

"Well I am no longer a princess now, not that I ever acted like one anyway. I always wanted adventure I wasn't like my sisters they enjoyed dressing up and going to dances. I wanted to be human to be apart of that world." Ariel said taking another bite.
"Father of course never approved. So you were a prince back in our world? Did you like being a prince Eric? Or did you long for adventure as well" Ariel asked him smiling.

Eric smiled. "Adventures seemed to find me... though I think I would have traded them in a heart beat to have a family again. Adventures are worthless without someone to share them with..." He took a sip from his glass. "Or rather that has been my experience. But I did love the ocean. Served with the royal navy for a time just to be on it."

Ariel was surprised he was alone...he was way to nice to be alone.
"I agree adventures are more fun with people to share them. I had a few like that with others I mean. Most of the time I had to make them on my own, I explored ships, collected human things. I bet you saw a lot of things with your time in the Navy?" Ariel took another sip of wine.

"I did. I saw a lot of extraordinary things." And a lot of sorrow. He had seen pirate ships sink vessels... the navy reaching the devastation too late. But he didn't want to bring that up. "I'm sure it's NOTHING compared to the wonders of the deep oceans... I've seen Animal Planet. Don't even TRY to convince me it isn't gorgeous down there." He grinned playfully, taking another bite of his meal.

"Yes the colors are amazing. I haven't seen anything here to compare to be honest, the flower shop came close with the colors. However even deeper where my kingdom was everything glitters the smallest streams of light hit the land making it glow. Us mermaids can see in the dark so we could see perfectly. However humans would see nothing but darkness." Ariel said taking another bite.
"I can't believe how good this fish is, I don't think I've had fish since I was a mermaid and we of course ate them raw." She laughed. "I wish I could tell you it was like sushi but from what I know its not. Though we did eat a lot of seaweed." Ariel liked the fact that Eric seemed interested in her world and he seem to not mind how much she talked.

Eric chuckled. "Seaweed huh? You know, when I visited Japan... or rather when RON did... well, I guess it was just a memory... but in Japan I recall trying dried, seasoned seaweed and eel bone. It was like their version of jerky and chips... it was... crunchy." He finally decided, being polite. Ron hadn't cared for it much, but he was open to trying a lot of things before making a judgement.
The prince sighed. "Sorry... it's hard to tell a story when you realize it never even happened... and yet, it feels so real. The soul INSIDE feels that it is real..."
