Alana LAUGHED OUT LOUD bitterly. Who did she think she was fooling? Ariel was NOT who she always was... not this uncaring, callous creature. Neptune, it was as if she and Alana had COMPLETELY switched places.
"Of COURSE he believed that!" She shot back. "What was I to TELL our father? That you WEREN'T kidnapped; just too busy singing at clubs and spending time with a pirate to give a shit?" Alana was loosing all the resolve that it had taken her half an hour to compose for this confrontation. "I don't feel bad for me... I feel bad for YOU. You think that choosing to act this way will make you strong... but now, MORE THEN EVER, I see you for the weak, frail creature that you are!"
Alana turned, about to fall apart, she motioned to Eric that they were leaving; she knew if she tried to say it verbally her voice would fail. She made for the door.

"Yes, that is what you should have said because its the truth I mean were are our other sisters. I found Adella the other day she didn't even know who I was. Hows that for compassion and sisterly devotion?"
Ariel walked them both to the door, "I don't think you should feel bad about me this isn't me choosing to act any certain way this is now who I am. Aren't you happy sister I am exactly the way you always thought I was, selfish, angry and cruel. So maybe you should pat yourself on the back for being completely right."

She looked at Ariel a final time. "This IS a choice, Ariel. And another rather POOR one..."
Alana turned away and left out the door. "Goodbye, sister."

Eric followed Alana out, "There's something wrong with her, Alana you have to know that. I have talked with her and I have never seen her acted like that." He put his arm around Alana.
"I am so sorry, maybe she needs time but its like she didn't care about any of it?"

"I think she's just flinging it back in my face... the resentment." She shot back, but then looked down, sighing. "Which I deserve. For all the things I said and did."

Eric pulled her close, "I don't know Alana, I talked with her about you and she never said anything bad about you. She is acting strange I think you should keep an eye on her at any rate. She will come around just give her time."

Alana stopped in the hallway and looked at Eric. "Look... I know you mean well, but you had A date with her...I have had a FEW conversations with her during this whole mess and I KNOW she is capable of more than just kind words. She knows how to defend herself, Eric... she's..." Alana huffed at what she was about to say, and the irony of it. "...She's only HUMAN... like the rest of us, now. And THIS, what ever it is... is a new defense, okay?"
She continued walking. "I'm not writing her off...I'm just really frustrated. THIS is what she wanted; peace between us. Acceptance... and now she's flinging it back in my face like it doesn't even matter???" Alana was feeling anger arise, but it wasn't the bitterness of before... when the dagger kept her soul in a state of rot. It was fresh, petty, and easily waved away. "I... I need some time. And so does she..."

Triton tossed in his hospital bed before he woke up completely, not sure of where he was at first. All the strange beeps and pumping noises that he didn't understand in this strange world, until Tim's memories started to fill him in. Ah yes... he was in a hospital... he had an attack... he was talking to Alana one moment and then the next-
No...no that wasn't right. It hadn't been Alana... it was Ariel. His precious Ariel. The king didn't realize that he was clutching at the edge of his blanket so tightly, as warm tears escaped the edges of his sore eyes. She was alright.
************************************************
They were ALL alright. All of his daughters accounted for, he let the attendants and guards escort them back to their chamber within the palace. It was over-kill, this deep at sea where no man could venture, but after witnessing the way those pirates had abducted the queen...
Triton grabbed up his Trident, swimming back to where the pirate ship had last been seen. It took him an hour to catch up to the ship, with it's unholy speed, but the Ocean belonged to the King, he could read it like a map. Guards flanked him as he rose to the surface; the waves becoming angry and gray, matching his eyes which were usually a rich aqua. The trident glowed in his hands, ready to defend his queen.
The man, the bearded man with smoke rising from him as if he was a creature from hell, stepped up to the rail. He gave a mock salute and motioned for his crew to drop something into the water. It was wrapped in a dirty sheet, but Triton could make out a tail... or what was left of one. He dove under the surface, catching the bundle as it floated downwards.
He trembled with rage, as he felt it's contents, pieces of it missing. Of HER missing. He knew she was dead, but he pulled the covering away to see the gore, to see what these pirates, what these HUMANS were capable of. He let out a bellow of raging grief as the ocean turned black. His tears became one with the salt of the water as he raised his weapon at the accursed vessel. A mountainous wave rolled the ship over at the King's command, as creatures from the deepest depths of the Ocean came and attacked, swallowing crew member's whole and ripping the ship apart.
Justice should have been served.
But Triton held the remains of his queen tight to him as the crew members hacked their way out of the bellies of the beasts, and as the ship... she corrected herself on the water by some evil power. The ocean was his to command... but this ship from hell refused to bow down. He watched as remains, both mermaid and human floated down from a whole in the ship's lower level, out with it's poisonous water. So many... hundreds maybe...
Humans were monsters...
****************************************************
And Ariel was in love with one... and not only a human. A PIRATE. The once powerful King of the Ocean curled on his side.
When he felt hand on his shoulder. Two violet eyes met his when turned.
"Alana." He breathed. Glad to be distracted from his thoughts.

"Hi daddy." Alana whispered. "You look better." Sort of a lie. He looked like he had seen a ghost, or something as equally terrifying. "Do you feel better?"
No answer. It's like he really enjoyed her being there, like she was something familiar he could cling to, but he wouldn't let her in. Not even a little.
"I saw Ariel today." She said. "I apologized to her... I really want to make things right, daddy. But I think we all need some... time." She supplied, guarded. She didn't want to upset him... though there was something itching at the back of her mind. Something Ariel had brought up the night before Hook left Storybrooke. Alana took her fathers calloused hand in her hers. It had once been smooth and so strong...
"Ariel... said something to me. About mom..." She began. His hand tightened around hers and his eyes closed tight. "What happened to mom, Dad? If I could just know... then maybe I could... I don't know... better understand WHY we are supposed to hate humans... and why Ariel was able to overcome that..."
A tear escaped the corner of his closed eye. "Oh... don't cry daddy." She wiped away the tear. "I'm sorry. You don't have to tell me. I just..." She looked down at blanket on the bed, sighing.
"Why don't you tell me how you and mom met?" She encouraged, squeezing his hand.

Triton opened his aqua eyes, looking up at his daughter.
"You've heard it so often..." He murmured, voice much more hoarse then it usually was. "...All of you. Used to ask me again and again..."

Alana propped her head up against her bent arm on the railing of the bed. She smiled down at him. "I don't mind... hearing it again..." She replied.

The corner of Triton's mouth quirked upwards. The setting was all wrong and there was only one daughter before him... but some of that old glow came back to warm his bones. If he closed his eyes he could almost imagine himself back in the palace, telling his young daughters this story that he had told so many times before. Athena at his side, her tail playfully grazing his as she linked her arm around him, leaning her head against his firm shoulder.
"I was very young then... yes, there was a time when your old father was young..." His daughters would giggle profusely at that, but now he only heard one huff of amusement. "And it was my duty to marry a princess from a far away ocean.... an alliance after a long feud spanning over MANY years..."
"But I was a curious young King, and would steal away to reefs unattended, mixing in with my subjects... and only a few nights before the wedding, a beautiful young mermaid collided into me on one of these ventures, unsure of where she was going." He would squeeze Athena's hand. Now he only had Alana's dainty hand squeezing his back. "I fell in love. It didn't make any sense at all. I barely knew her...and I was promised to another... but I saw her every night. Thea was her name... and our love grew, but I knew my place... it was on the throne of Atlantica. I loved this enchanting mermaid... but I loved my subjects as well... and disgracing this far away Ocean kingdom would bring danger upon all once more."
Athena would kiss the side of his face; she was devoted to her subjects as well, and loved him for putting compassion before his own wants.
"The wedding came, time to meet my wife Athena in person... but no bride could be found... Only a messenger, telling me that Princess Athena would not be marrying me. For she had given her heart to another. I was FURIOUS... I had given up Thea for this union!" Athena would laugh and then bury her heart-shaped face into his broad arm at the next part.
"But when I swam to my bride's room... do you know who I found?"
"MOMMY!!!!" The merchildren would shout with glee. Today, Alana looked down at him, smiling tenderly. "Mother." She said, remembering that this was the point that all of them would be happy and glad.
"Yes, your mother... Thea... Athena... one and the same." He wold brush her floating alburn hair behind her ear. "The same mermaid who had won my heart..." He would lean over, tilting her chin up, kissing her tenderly. Royal daughters would swim about gleefully, until the Queen would gracefully soar over to them, calming them down with a lullaby with her enchanting voice. She would often choose a love song, glancing up at her husband as she held one of her daughters in her lap, the others huddled around. Getting drowsy.
Triton opened his eyes. Alana's eyes were teary, but she was smiling broadly. Triton's lower lip began to quiver uncontrollably. To remember something so sweet...only to remember how it all ended. The tears began to roll.

"Oh daddy, please don't cry..." Alana pleaded, unable to control her own tears. "That's such a beautiful memory... it should make you happy." She supplied. She wiped her eyes and sniffed. "Maybe you should tell that to Dr. Hopper... you know he's always saying-"
Triton withdrew his hand from his daughter, looking away.
"Dad... please." She KNEW how he felt about the Doctor, a HUMAN, telling him how to sort out his feelings. "He's only trying to HELP. You two have made so much progress together..."

"A human..." Triton spat. "A human telling me, a KING... a god of the sea... how I should feel and think. All because I merely LOOK human..." He was getting enraged now, his heart monitor sounding off the increasing pace of his heart. It was uncomfortable. He clutched at his chest.
"Humans... can't trust them... you must NEVER trust them, Alana. NOT ONE..." He told her firmly.
The nurse came in quickly, hearing the alarm of his monitors go off. She bustled around, took out a syringe of something and inserted the liquid into his iv hose.
Triton's lids were getting heavy after the administration, though they had managed to darken from his usual rich aqua to shark black as his anger grew. he was nodding off now, thinking of an defense against these nurses that had him hooked up to hoses and monitors like some kind of experiment.

Alana caressed his forehead as the nurse put him under just to slow his heart rate.
"Okay..." She said weakly, just to satisfy him. It seemed to, for he closed his eyes before his face relaxed with slumber. Alana put her face in her hands, feeling the weight of everything upon her shoulders, as usual. Her father ill, no way of telling him that she couldn't stay away from a human that she cared for, trying to find the last of her sisters, and Ariel acting so strange. She thought that feeling whole again with the dagger being destroyed would make everything better... but it just seemed to make everything hurt more.
Perhaps this is what Ariel had experienced, feeling so alone, and Alana making her believe that everyone should loathe her. No wonder she had come to harden herself to it... loosing that bit of herself that had made her so unique among all of the royal daughters.
The nurse saw how distraught Alana looked and offered to get her something. She shook her head and turned to leave. Triton was in good hands. Both Dr. Hopper and Dr. Whale had been so supportive... but her father's warning echoed in her head, as it always had BEFORE the curse. She would see when she would be able to take her father home. It's what he would want.
