"We'll just... deal with it IF it comes to that..." Whale tried to reassure her. "Nothing is certain. But I can only blame strange things that he may see or hear on the sedatives for so long." He sighed. "The sooner he's out of Storybrooke, the better." He took another sip of his coffee.

Red nodded," I'm sorry you have to deal with that on top of all the other craziness" she said with a weak smile," I don't know if anyone's told you, but you're doing fantastic job"

Whale lowered his coffee down, looking at her. With his cheeks burning, he was thankful for the cover of night. "...Well.. I do what I can." was all he could manage. "And you... you've made everything quite bearable. From your amazingly creamy mashed potatoes," he started, almost laughing; he knew he sounded ridiculous. He looked down at his coffee. "... to your kind words... and belief that we can make more of ourselves with this second chance we've been given."
Too sappy? That was far to sappy. He cleared his throat and continued walking, before he noticed the first sign of snow flurries falling from the sky. He put out a gloved hand to catch one. "Looks like we're in for some unexpected weather." He remarked, then his face fell a little. "You... you didn't want to head back, did you?" A little snow never hurt anyone... but his Victorian counterpart was protesting for him not to get his one and only true friend sick from the cold. But Whale didn't want to end this walk before it had barely begun.

Red had hardly noticed the cold weather- probably part of her wolfy-ness- or the intense blush in her cheeks from Whales words.
" I-I hardly noticed," She look up at the sky and watched a few flakes descend gracefully from the sky," I don't think we need to go back just yet- besides, I'm guessing this trail loops back to town at some point, otherwise I'm sure I can find a way back" she smiled weakly

Whale laughed. "I guess you would be able to, wouldn't you?" Then there was an awkward pause between the two. Whale didn't want to be rude... but he was fascinated with the fact that he was walking next to a werewolf, something he had only ever read about in one of Elizabeth's trashy novels back in his world. He opened his mouth to ask his question, but then shut it by taking another sip of coffee. But the scientist in him was relentless. "...Does it hurt?" Whale finally asked. "When you... yah know..." he curled his hand to make it look like talons as he made a silly scary face. He even added a slight grrr... Dear Darwin, what was WRONG with him?

Ruby laughed at his terrible impression of her," Well, for a long time I didn't even know that was happening.... but I think once I had learned that I was.... 'Wolfing out' and I couldn't control it really...." She looked down," Yeah... It was probably a twist between guilt and fear.... but it killed me nearly every night...."

Whale looked down, embarrassed for asking such an insensitive thing.
"At least you didn't have a choice as it was happening to you. You had an ailment with grave consequences, but you learned how to live with it. And still emerge as a good person despite it all." He said. "I CHOSE to be the monster that I was... regardless of what it did to the people that meant most to me." Whale looked up at the winter moon, so clear despite the snow falling. "Even when I saw that what I had done to my brother was a complete and utter abomination... my first thought was..." he huffed bitterly at himself. "...was how I could do it better NEXT time..."

Red stopped and looked at him, then gently brought her arm around him," Well.... I had good friends.... maybe you've done some .... you've made some mistakes, but I said it before, you can make up for it here"
She then reached up since he was a bit taller and kissed his cheek.

A dark cloud felt like it was forming above him, with evil deeds of the past and present failures coming to a head at the forefront of his mind.
And then Ruby kissed him.
It had definitely shaken him out of his dark stupor. He looked down at her, slightly startled, but a small smile spread across his face.
They continued to walk, talking about this and that, not realizing how late it was getting.
"Are you kidding me?" Whale said, putting his empty coffee down on the railing of a small bridge they had come across along the path. The snow was coming down thicker, but it was powdery and dry. "'Young Frankenstein' is a Mel Brooks parody about... MY LIFE? The same director that did 'Blazing Saddles' and 'Space Balls'?! Well I'm just gonna HAVE to rent it now..." He laughed.

Red leaned on the bridge rail and laughed,"It's pretty funny, I mean it beats the living hell out of most of this worlds werewolf movies,"
She looked over at him and smiled, when he wasn't dark and gloomy Dr Frakenstein could actually be... Fairly charming- as strange as that sounded even if only in her head. She glanced over at the moon which had lit up the woods rather nicely for them though the snow was making it a bit harder to see. Then Red noticed the time...
"Oh! Geez..... Whale maybe we should start walking back, Granny's going to skin me alive when she heard me coming home this late"

"Really..." Whale asked. "Then maybe we should watch a few together and compare notes on how badly they screwed up the legends..." He didn't get a response back to that invitation like he had hoped he would. Perhaps she didn't hear him. He laughed it off nervously.
Ruby mentioned the late time and the young doctor furrowed his blonde brows. "Late? But it's only-" he looked down at his watch. "-3 AM??? YIKES. Gretta's going to let me have it when I show up looking like a zombie this morning."
Whale could see that Ruby had an apologetic expression on her face. He spoke up before she could say anything. "I thank you, for this. I REALLY needed it. And I hope you survive Granny's wrath enough to consider doing it again sometime."
The path finally led them back to the edge of the Hospital parking lot. Before they parted ways, to head to their individual cars, Whale stepped in closer towards her. "Again... thank you...." he felt something else was needed, to convey the sincere affection he felt for her... but he hesitated on what to do. Old Whale would have selfishly seized the girl and laid one on her, thinking she was absolutely begging for it. Victorian Victor, who had never been that suave with the opposite gender, would have settled for a curt not, and if daring enough, a handshake.
But the young doctor awkwardly bent down for a hug. Her cheek brushed against his as he did so; hers was soft and warm... UNBELIEVABLY warm. Must be the wolf thing.
"Good night, Ruby Lucas." Whale said

"It's a date," Ruby smiled as she hugged him back. She pulled back a moment, meeting his eyes with hers, then leaned into him enough so she could whisper but he could still hear,"Good night Victor Frankenstein," and finally gave him a light kiss on the lips.

As she walked away, Whale just stood in complete shock...
She had told him awhile back that she wasn't interested... But she just kissed him. But she had SAID that it would never happen between them...ever... BUT SHE JUST KISSED HIM... ON THE LIPS.
Victor concluded that the female sex is a complex enigma. But Whale just stiffly turned to walk to his car, wide grin stuck on his face.
Even when he got home he still felt... GIDDY... with the memory of her soft lips on his. Even if it was only for a moment. He shed his jacket and stripped off his tie. He smiled to himself, unbuttoning his shirt, thoughts consumed by Ruby the werewolf girl.
...He didn't even notice the silent intruder behind him with a crowbar, posed to take the young doctor down.

The next Morning Ruby had gotten up... fairly early- not very common to her routine unless Grannies was opening early. Though it was clear her early-rise was not due to wanting to get a jump on Diner hours.
It was probably, what? eleven... maybe as much as eighteen times Granny had to snatch away Ruby's phone in order for her to take orders properly(It was bad enough the girl came home at such an obscenely late hour to begin with). Each time Ruby huffed and waited until she could steal it back . FINALLY Ruby took her lunch break, she quick wiped out the phone and checked her messages.... nothing.
She tilted her head, maybe the first two didn't send...? Nope they sent.... She tried again- who'd have thought she'd actually be using this number? Whale gave it to her EONS ago and the only reason she took it was to not seem like a complete B-... well.... Anyway, this was starting to feel weird, she stood and told Granny she was going for a walk.
She figured she'd give the Hospital a try.

Whale's head rolled to the side, but seeing as it just kept rolling without hitting a pillow, he jerked himself awake.
...and immediately regretted it. Intolerable soreness exploded up the side of his neck and down his shoulders. There was something dried and crusty on the side of his head. Was it blood? He tried to reach for his splitting head, but his hands were bound with something thin and cutting into his wrists.
He blinked around at his surroundings. He was INSIDE, but it was some kind of tractor warehouse... with apparently no indoor heating. Whale could see his breath puffing in front of him.
"Hello?" he called. He struggled a bit more in his chair, before calling out again, with a little more desperation. "HELLO???"
And then finally some movement. Whale recognized the man. He had treated the farmer for a heart attack a few years ago... or so his memory supplied. But something was wrong with the man... his eyes were cloudy and his movements were not fluid.
"Mr. Brown?" Whale asked. "This is Dr. Whale... do you remember me? Mr.-" the seemingly possessed man lunged forward, tying a gag around the Doctor's mouth.
High up, on another level of the warehouse, Whale could hear tsking. The second person was high up, and yet he sounded like he was right by the prisoner's ear.
